Ensure safety with window wells that comply with International Residential Code

Basement window wells make the basement very bright and beautiful with natural lighting during day time. Apart from the beauty it gives to the basement it is necessary that the window wells stick to the International Residential Code called the Egress Code for safety of the occupants of the basement. There must be escape systems in the window wells that allow the occupants to escape if needed from the basement. The window wells should be designed in such a way and installed taking all these into account.

According to the IRC code the sill height of the window should not exceed 44 inches from the floor. Moreover the minimum opening height of the window should be 24 inches and the width should be minimum 20 inches. The minimum opening area should be 5.7 sq.ft. When you are installing the window wells make sure these norms are followed. You can always consult with the building inspector in your locality to know more about the IRC norms to be followed while installing window wells. If the window wells are deeper than 44 inches it is necessary that a ladder be attached to the basement window wells. It is to be ensured that the grates should be removable without the use of special tools.
